Also, was war so alles los. Ich war zweimal in Seoul innerhalb der letzen drei Wochen, einmal mit der ISO um mir mal wieder altbekanntes zeugs und ein bisschen was neues anzusehen, und einmal um mir die DMZ anzuschauen. Das war echt ein Erlebnis, das erste mal in einem “hostilen” (deutsches wort?) Gebiet zu sein. Da stehen sich die Koreaner echt Aug-in-Aug gegenüber. War echt eindrucksvoll. Vorallem sowas wir der tunnel, den die Nordkoreaner unter dem Land gegraben haben (90m tief) um einzudringen. Krank, sowas. (@G,D: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Golf_Course_Camp_Bonifas.jpg )

Dieses Wochende gings dann nochmal kurz nach Busan, die zweitgrößte Stadt Koreas, ein bisschen Sightseeing mit Koreanischen Freunden. Wir haben uns unter anderem ein Basketballspiel angeschaut. Gegen die NBA wars langweilig, aber es kam mal wieder ein Koreanischer Fakt raus: alles gehört den Unternehmen. Hier ist jedes Team (egal in welchem Sport) von einer großen Firma gesponsort, dementsprechend waren das dort die Busan KTF (Handybetreiber) – das wäre wie wenn wir demnächst Löwenbräu München 1860 hätten. Naja, was ich mir so alles zum Land denke könnt ihr wenn ich wieder da bin lesen. Das werden ein, zwei recht lange Artikel

Sonst, du Uni ist fast durch. Das Unileben hier ist anders, die letzten zwei Wochen waren durchgehendes lernen. Hab am Freitag zwei Klausuren gehabt (Telecommunications Policy, hätte besser laufen können, und Koreanisch, – mei) und dann heute noch eine Abgabe, und am Mittwoch die letzte Klausur. Koreaner lernen übrigens 24h. Die Bibliothek ist 24 Stunden anähernd voll, ich muss da echt mal Bilder von machen. Ich meine, die SCHLAFEN auf ihren Büchern, wenn sie zu müde werden, und machen dann weiter. Irgendwie unverständlich.

Naja, soweit hab ich jetzt noch 5 Tage, ab Mittwoch dann ohne Uni. Dann gehts noch ein paarmal feiern (Abschiedsfeiern für mich und für andere) und in die Stadt um letzte besorgungen zu machen, dann am Samstag Mittag nach Seoul um dort noch zeugs zu besorgen und dann um 23:55 in den Flieger richtung Dubai, um dann am 23.12 um 20:30 in München zu sein.

Damit hab ich dann 4 Monate über 8000km weit weg verbracht, hab ein Halbentwickeltes Land mit unglaublichem Potenzial und eine sehr strangen Gesellschaft erlebt. Und gehe mit einem weinende und einem lachenden Augen. Ich freue mich auf meine Freunde und meine Freundin, auf meine Family (Weihnachten wäre doof) und auf meine Privatsphäre. Auf Salat, gutes Fleisch, gutes Brot und einfaches Chinesisches Essen. Aber mehr dazu schreib ich im Flieger.

Das Land übertreibst mal wieder, aber das tun die hier eh alle, wenns um Medien geht. Überall Videos, bewegte Bilder, und die Idee mal keine Handyverbindung zu haben ist fast schon Abstruss

Organisiert von unserer “International Student Organisation” gings am Samstag morgen los, erstmal 3 Stunden Busfahrt in den Lustigen Unibussen.

Gyeongju ist die ehemalige Hauptstadt des Königreiches Silla, eines der sog. Drei Königreiche die von ca. 0 bis 1000 Korea unter sich aufgeteilt haben und später dann auch die Hauptstadt des “unified Silla”. Das heißt, die Stadt ist um einiges Älter, als alles was wir bisher gesehen haben.

Angefangen hats mit Burial Mounds, Grabhügeln, der Könige – lustigerweise weis man bei den meisten nicht wer das war. Es war aber sehr interessant, vorallem als wir in einem rein konnte und uns die Struktur mal von innen ansehen konnten. Die Grabbeigaben waren echt mächtig, aber die Struktur denkbar einfach (Holzsarg, Holzkammer, Erde, Stein Stein Stein (~10m), Erde). Aber es war endlich mal was, was richtig alt war (1500 Jahre, ca)

Dann gings in die Tempel Seokgulam (eine Grotte mit einem super schönen Buddha, als Steinmosaik – kranke sache, ne Statue zusammenzusetzen), und dann über einen superschönen Weg runter zum

berümtesten und wohl auch größten Tempels des Landes, Bulguksa

Der Tempel ist verglichen mit allem was ich bisher gesehen habe gigantisch. Die Stellen die man auf den Bildern sieht, sind in Korea Berühmt und zieren unter anderem Geldstücke.

Die Nacht haben wir dann im fröhlichen Gelage und mit gigantischen Mengen산겁살 (Sankopsal, Schweinebauch den man sich selber Brät und dann im Salatblatt isst) in einem viel zu kleinem Raum verbracht und am nächsten Tag gings dann ins Gyeongju National Museum, um sich ein bisschen

Tiefergehend zu informieren. Die Klocke die ihre seht ist riesig, und wenn man bedenkt wie alt das Ding ist (1200 Jahre) echt beeindruckend. Sonst wäre das Museum einigermassen interssant, man hat mal etwas über die Kultur Koreas vor 1000 Jahren erfahren. Ich bin immernoch faziniert davon, das dieses Land trotz der nähe zu zwei solchen Übermächten (China und Japan sind ja nicht wirklich weit weg ) seit so ewiger Zeit eigenständig ist.

Noch ein Wort zum Tourismus – das war jetzt das erste mal, das ich mit größerem Tourismus hier in berührung gekommen bin. Wie üblich, das meiste war inner-koreanisch, aber es war auch mal interessant zu sehen, wie Koreaner Tourismus haben. Sehr Sehr direkt auf den Tourismus eingestimmt, kaum verhellen. Das Gefühl “hilfe, ich will kein Tourist sein”kennt hier gar niemand!

Naja, ich leg mich wieder schlafen, bin etwas krank (ne Erkältung). Und morgen muss ich dann die TUM präsentieren. Lad die Powerpoints dann mal hoch

Sorry for the long time no posting, but i was busy as you will see.
We first spend a longer weekend in Seoul, (she arrived on Friday and we left Seoul for Daejeon on Tuesday) than a day “at home” to wash cloth and do some other refueling and then on wednesday, we were of to Tokio. Its funny and sad, but a <2 hour flight took more than 10 hours of total traveling time, which kind of sucks. We left Daejeon around 9, to arrive at the airport just in time for the plane (it takes three hours with a bus from Daejeon to the Airport, which is about 40 Minutes from Downtown Seoul. Munich Airport is close compared to that) and it took another 2 hours to get from narnita airport (Tokios airport) to Tokio. Then we had 5 days in Tokio, and then the whole tour back to Daejeon.

In Daejeon, staying there for 4 days, we had bigger trouble finding a hotel than expected. The first motel we took turned out to be a “real” “love motel” – as Koreans don’t have much privacy at home (small appartments for many ppl, etc) love motels are really really common. When you wanna get closer to your Boy/Girlfriend the only option is usually to go to either a DVD-Bang (renting a room to “watch a movie” ) or to go to a motel. Well, after this horrible first night (it was a barocke stilled, horribly kitchy room) we went to another place that was much much nicer, but also a bit more expensive. Still, we paid 30.000Won per night, so not really a lot of money.

The major happening of the next couple of days was me loosing my wallet on Wednesday night, followed by a lot of (unsuccessful) searching, calls etc. I’m still trying to recover from that

Afterwards, (so last friday) we went for two more days to seoul, this time into a much much nicer hotel than ever before, costing around 50.000W/night (less than  40€ for the room) with a 40+” TV, VOD (over a internet-computer) etc and very clean. It was a really pleasant expierence after some of the other motels.

So much for that, i’m off to sleep now. Pictures will come in due time, as will a much longer Blog article comparing these to mega-citys.

Oh yes, and:

I OWN AN IPOD- I bought it for 30.000Yen (around 180€) in the Apple-Store in Ginza, a Black Classic 80GB – and I’m freaking happy with it. Japan seems to be considerably cheaper for Computer goods than Korea, which is weird, considering that everything else in Japan is a lot more expensive than Korea

I’ll focus on the school, the rest will come later.

I’m taking three classes (with Korean Camp already done, it ended this week),

• Telecommunications Management and Policy
• Intro to AI
• Advanced Algorithmns
• Basic Korean

with totally different requirements. TelPol (the first one) is a very very Economics-related class, which i like. We’re having a test in it in 8 hours, but it’s the second of two, and i had a very good result in the frist one (98 of 150 points, but somewhere under the top 3-4 in the class). And homework wise, we’ve to do a 4-5 page paper every week, but it’s no real work (2-3h)

AI and Advanced Algorithmns are real computer science classes, with AI covering the basics of machine learning. There we’ve to do some real homework, 15-20h every two weeks, an implementation of a specific problem in the R language (fun stuff ;D). 70% of the total grade will come from this, w/ another ten from attendance/partitipation (totally normal here, i’ve that in every class) and the rest (a mere 20%) from the final exam. That actually is quite nice, as the actually subject resembles DS or similar. The class is fast paced, very interesting, but seriously hard. You have to know your matrices, your probability and your overall math well. I don’t. So the class is hard ;D. This is actually the only “big” class I have. there are over 60 people in the class, normal here is around 30. And it’s a very strange mixture between lecture and class, with the teacher asking every two slides if you understood it or not. Nobody really uses that, but still, it’s pretty different than what i’m used to

AA is similar, with a bit harder (as more math-sided and theoretical) and more weighted homework. AA is the only undergrad class I’m taking, anyways – which is weird, considering that i’m officially an undergrad here. and held by a german professor

The overall workload  is amazin – and the work the koreans do even more. i’ve pulled several all-nighters to finish my homework – but the koreans are much worse

We’ve just been studying at the “bachelor library” – a Stabi time 3, with hughe group-studying areas and everything. just amazing, seeing all these koreans in there small stalls studying. O yeah, midterms are a big thing for bachelors, but as i’ve only higher level classes, i don’t have midterms. And as alex is just arriving in dubai any minute, i’ll be enjoying my free week.

And yeah, i’m going to tokio, suckers! ;D

Die Uni mit ihren drei Kursen die ich momentan belege verlangt mir einiges ab.
Jede Woche oder alle zwei Wochen recht aufwändige Hausaufgaben, die auch noch große Teile meiner Note ausmachen (>70%) und nicht gerade einfach sind. Heute saß ich mit einem Kumpel an einer Hausaufgabe in AI, von 11:00-4:00 – was dann in das andere Problem mündete, ich kann irgendwie nicht mehr richtig schlafen. Ich habe in den letzten 7 Tagen 2-3 mal durchgemacht (meistens vor der Abgabe einer Hausaufgabe, ganz normal hier) und schlafe dafür dann immer mal wieder ganze tage. Irgendwie ist das scheiße und nervt ein bisschen.

Hoffe das ich, nachdem es mir letztens so verdammt schlecht ging mit einer Hausaufgabe, meine Lektion gelernt habe und in nächster Zeit etwas früher ins Bett gehe.

Ein müder Blitz sagt

Grundsätzlich ist hier vieles billger, allerdings nicht um viel, und man hat das Gefühl das der Wechselkurs uns momentan SEHR zu gute kommt (1:1300 für Euro, 1:1000 für Dollar, was eher der Wahrheit entspricht).
Grundsätzlich hat man die gleichen möglichkeiten zu Reisen wie in Europa auch. Flugzeug (allerdings nur von Seoul aus, fällt also mehr oder weniger aus), Zug und Bus. Wobei, Bus in Europa? Eher nach Osteuropa, sonst macht das ja keiner von uns . Hier sind Busse eigentlich eine ganz gute Möglichkeit. Die fahren nach fast überall, man besorgt sich am Schalter ein Ticket für entweder eine “Limosine/Deluxe” oder die normale Variante. Delux-Busse haben nur 3 Sitze, massig Platz (selbst für mich sind dafür aber auch meistens um die 8000-9000W teurer. Für die Bustour von Daejeon zum Incheon Intl’ Airport (3h, 150km) zahlt man z.B. 13.000W (Mun Sam Jan Won ), als Deluxe aber 21.000W (I Mun Jan Won). Von hier nach Busan kostet es weniger als 10.000W, obwohl die fahrt fast genauso lang ist. Es fahren verdammt viele Busse, aber man braucht halt Zeit, weil die Autobahnen eindeutig nicht das schnellste ist.

In Daejeon haben wir aber einen riesen Vorteil: als zentrales Verkehrskreuz sind wir der Endpunkt des KTX (die Koreaner haben den TGV nachgebaut ) und sind in Seoul in unter 50 Minuten. Kostet dann aber 21.000W im Gegensatz zum langsamsten Zug (der 2 Stunden braucht) und 9.000W kostet – oder zum Bus, der noch weniger kostet. In die andere Richtung gehts auch mit dem Zug, aber nicht mehr auf einer ausgebauten Strecke, dauert also etwas länger.

Innerhalb der Stadt gibt es je nach Stadt unterschiedliche Möglichkeiten: in kleineren Städten (<10Mio ) ist das Taxi das ideale Verkehrsmittel, und auch gut bezahlbar. Standardmäßig kostet das Taxi 1800W für den ersten Kilometer oder so, und danach dann für die zusätzlich gefahren Strecke. 15 Minuten Taxifahrt kosten ca. 3000-4000W, und durch 4 Personen (manchmal auch 5, wenn man nett redet-äh, gestikuliert) wirds recht billig. Unsere Standardmaßangabe hier, wieweit etwas weg ist, ist in Taxipreis: “ca. 7000W weit.”. Das ist dann einmal durch die Stadt. Abends wird aber etwas teurer, da kostet dann der Grundpreis 2100, und die Fahrteinheit (weiß nicht genau, ich vermute 100m), sind dann 120W statt 100W. Aber das wird irgendwie nur manchmal benutzt, hängt wohl vom Taxifahrer ab.
Und Taxifahrer fahren genauso verrückt wie überall, wahrscheinlich noch schlimmer. Rot Ampeln sind ein Vorschlag, mehr nicht. Auch Fahrbahnen kennen die ncht so wirklich (und hier sind die meisten Strassen echt mächtig, mit 5+ Spuren).

Was ich meinte mit <10Mio ist, das es in Seoul so nicht geht. Dazu ist da der Verkehr zu schlimm. Dafür gibts da gute bis sehr gute Öffentliche Verkehrsmittel.

Gut, die gibt es in Daejeon auch, nur die machen fast nur Sinn wenn man alleine unterwegs ist. Ein Bus kostet min. 1000W, also wirds je nach Anzahl an Leuten und Distanz z.T. echt viel billger, wenn man ein Taxi nimmt. Nur z.B. zur Daejeon Station (also einmal durch die Stadt) ist um einiges billiger, den Bus zu nehmen. Das System ist sehr gut dokumentiert und verständlich, und wie fast alles in Korea (bis auf die Fahrweise) ist es sehr pünktlich und sauber

1993 gabs eine Expo hier, und naja, was soll ich sagen. Nachdem ich auf der Expo 2000 war, kamm mir das alles sehr vertraut vor. Zwar um einiges kleiner hier, dafür gabs dann aber auch eine Monorail UND eine Seilbahn auf dem recht kleinen Gelände und verdammt viele sehr komiche Gebäude. Aber wie fasst alles was ich hier bisher gesehen habe, schaut es, obwohl es noch recht neu ist, doch irgendwie schon abbruchsreif aus.
Wir sind zwar nicht wirklich in die Gebäude rein, aber von aussen wirkt das alles ein bisschen verlassen und runtergekommen. Und plan und sinnlos in der Landschaft.
Aber die Fahrradtour war schön!

Gestern (also Samstag) gings dann mit dem “Korean Camp” nach Seoul. Lustigerweise das erstemal, das ich im Zentrum des Landes war. Wir waren erstmal in Insadong, einer der eher touristischen Gegenden, was essen und ein bisschen durch die Gegend schauen. Dabei waren wir auf einem recht coolen Hochhaus

und in einem “kleinen” Buddisischen Tempel.

Ich mag diese Tempel echt. Es ist meistens eine Ansammlung von Gebäuden, mit einem oder zwei Schreinen. Das ganze ist frei zugänglich, und keiner stört sich an einem. Die Mönche, die es in jedem Tempel gibt, sind echt super freundlich, und erklären einem auch gerne mal was. Aber noch interessanter ist das Beten. Gerade in diesem Tempel in Seoul waren ca. 100 Frauen (ich vermute immernoch es war ein Frauentempel) am beten. Also 100 mal vor dem Buddha verneigen. Okay, schon etwas krass, aber die Ruhe und die Individualtität davon ist wesentlich schöner als das komische Gottesdienstzeugs der Christen. Hmm, hab mich etwas verrannt, ich glaub ich schreib da mal nen kompletten Blog-Artikel drüber.

Naja, nach dem Tempel und ein bisschen rumsitzen (mir gings vom Abend vorher noch verdammt schlecht, da waren wir an einer traditionellen Koreanischen Strassenbar und es war viel zu viel Soju – der Abend ist mir in verdammt schlechter erinnerung) gings dann zum Changdeokgung (einem der großen Paläste) – eigentlich eine super Sache. Aber leider war die Organisation sowas von bescheiden, das wir, eine Gruppe von 50 Leuten, die zu 97% kein oder sehr sehr wenig koreanisch sprechen, nicht passend zur Englischen Tour gekommen sind, sonder eben während einer Koreanischen Tour. Da man das alles nicht alleine erkunden darf, haben wir fast gar keinen Informationen bekommen, da hilft Wikipedia mehr. Aber die gesamte Anlage war echt wunderschön. Das nächste mal werde ich probieren, da am Donnerstag hin zu kommen, da kann man es dann selbstständig erkunden. (sonst nur in Touren)

Übrigens ist hier das herangehen an Altertümer ein anderes als in Europa. Wenn war abbrennt (was recht einfach passiert, das 99% der Gebäude nur ein steinernes Fundament haben, der Rest ist eine tragende Holzkonstruktion und leichte Holzwände) wird es mit teilen von anderen, weniger wichtigen Gebäuden wieder aufgebaut. Auch sonst wird viel renoviert, erneuert und verändert, also sachen die wir nie machen würden.
Vorallem während der Japanischen Besetzung (Anfang des 20. Jahrhunderts) ist sehr sehr viel abgebrannt. Komischerweise, aber wohl bedingt durch die Bauweise, haben wir kaum was gefunden, was älter als 400 Jahre ist. Das älteste Gebäude in diesem Palast (ein “Tor”) ist übrigens von 1416. Europäische Kirchen sind dagegen echt Urzeitungetüme.

After we had been to Nam Won, we head out towards the mountains (well everything is mountains here) crossing the Jirisan National Park. But as it started to rain (or better pour down), we “watched” from the car. There wasn’t a lot to see in the dark, but still, it was nice. The Landscape is really beautiful here.

We had some trouble with a waterfall we wanted to see. the way there was a really small street (more a dirttrack) and when we tried to turn the car around, i couldn’t do it. I def. failed that test badly. The maindriver Olivier had to do it :(. The day was basiclly marked with trying to find our way. We tried to get a route through Jirisan, as we wanted to get to the other side. But in the end we just had to back-up a whole way and turn around (on some really really small mountain streets). Several hours later than we wanted to, we arrived in Jinju, a somewhat big City (I think somewhere around 600.00) where we had some food and got a motel. We had a great night out that night, we went to our first nightclub. A Korean nightclub is (in difference to a club) a place where you go in and “rent” a seat. You have to get a table for your group, which is somewhat expensive but includes the alcohol (beer, in our case) – the one we went to was 45KW (so around 40€) for 4 Persons for the beer, fruits (always food to the drinks, i like that ) and the seats. So, you can go dance on the dancefloor, watch the shows (they change from music to shows to slow music all the time) and can then just sit there and talk if you want to. It was a really cool expierence.

the next day started considerably later, and we went the harbor-town of Sansheon (first time we saw the sea in korea!) and checked out the “castle”.
Afterwards, some “braver” of us (4 guys including me) went into the water (it had around 18° outside and was raining, as usual) and enjoyed a swim in the “south sea” as its called.
We spend the rest of the day with driving around the islands of the coast and ended up in the town of yeosu at night. Another motel, another dinner (i think it was barbeque again) and another, not so nice nightclub. it was still okay, but not that great (as the first one).

The next day (yeah, it was still raining, what a surprise), we went on to see some more islands,cumulating to see a really nice buddhist temple (hey, my first one) on the tip of the furthest (southest) island facing east-southward, but out into the sea. It was a really nice setting, but the climb up there was also “nice”. Stairs – and lots of them. After that we drove of into the country, (it had stopped raining by that time), we wanted to hike the next day.

We spend the night at a really small town close to the NP we wanted to hike in (Wolchulsan) and slept in the smallest room so far.

The hike the next day was a lot tenser than thought. It started out with another temple, and then it got steep. And steeper. The 11 Km it was took us about 5 hours (okay, 4 without the breaks). it was a very uneven path, leading up and down over rocks and stones, with basically no even grounds in between. We did a total of 1000m altitude (up and down). The view from the highest peak (850 over NN) was really nice tho. But the way down (700m straight) was hard, as it was starting to get dark, we were all pretty tired and had to hurry quite a bit.

We spend the night in Mokpo, a harborcity on the Western seaboard, and slept in a JimJilbang. A weird mixture between a Sauna and a public sleeping place, were in one floor everybody runs around as in a sauna (naked, but obviously only same sex) and then on the next floor, there’s a hughe stone floor on which everybody sleeps. The floor is heated and a lot more comfortable than it looks. Although it still hurt (there was only a wooden Pillow between you and the stones) it was pretty good.

The next day, with bright sunlight got us back to the beach (this time it was the “yellow sea”) for about two hours and then back to Kaist.

It was very interesting trip, and i learned lots about korea!

Okay, the basics: we left on Friday the 21th around 16:30 with two cars (10 people packed into those) and returned on Wednesday the 26th around 17:00 with the same two cars and the same 10 people (but 1000km more on the bill).
We traveled through a big part of south and south-west South Korea, seeing several cities, National Parks, Temples and much more

So, the travel-setting: Olivier rented with the help of his roommate two cars, a Samsung-Renault SM5 (comparable to a A6, just a bit cheaper , the black car) and a SM3 (Honda Civic to Accord, the blue car (aka. the SPOILER)). We got a group of ten people together, 5 French, 2 Dutch one Cameroonian, one Norwegian-Turk, one real Turk and me. Well, besides the Dutch, the Norwegian and me everbody was fluent in French. So you could hear a lot more French on this journey than i liked. Especially cuz i was the only none French in the black car. But my Frensh is improving fast

Day 1&2: As said, we set of around 4:30pm. As it gets dark in this country around 18:30 each day, we arrived in Nam Won, our first station when it was deep “night”, around 7. We thought that we would have really bad traffic, as all the Koreans were going home to their familys over Chosuk and warned us that there would be a lot of traffic (like, 5 hours for 100km or something) – but it wasn’t all that bad at all.

In Nam Won, we went to the “Tourist Area”, and wanted to find some food. Most of the stuff didn’t look too promising, but by “accident” we found a really cheap motel. Korean style motel. 60.000W for 10 people, one big room. Cool thing. We parked our cars, and walked around the place a little bit, had some food, and then some beers. The usual. But, the city Nam Won (City of Love, we should find out why later) was deserted. Everything was totally empty, nobody on the streets, nothing. So we went home pretty soon (well most parts of the group, but the group usually split up at nights).
Oh yeah, i was saying “korean style motel”. thats close to the cheapest place you can stay here, and it’s really nice. You get a room, (most of the time with TV and Aircondition) with it’s own bath – but no beds. You sleep on the floor, on a thicker blanket as a “mattress” and a thinner one as a blanket. Together with a pillow that makes up for a pretty comfortable sleep. It’s only a weird feeling for us, to lay next to each other on the plain floor.

After a good night of sleep, we set of to see the Nam Won Park, a Park telling the story of a Couple (pretty interesting, i’ll try to add a link to it later) and also some other pretty odd ideas there (there’s a pond, which symbolizes the milkyway, and the bridge over it was the only possibilities two gods could meet each so-and-so many years), but the setup of the park was nice and interesting to see. As this story if really famous in Korea, and because of the many lovestories related to this park, the whole city is called “City of love” – which we couldn’t really understand
